When is it too late to take music lessons?
The short answer is never. It is never too late to begin taking music lessons and, in fact, now may be the perfect time!
The benefits of learning to play an instrument are not reserved for school-aged children and an adult with realistic expectations and a strong desire will excel and have a great time in the process.
There are, of course, a few things to keep in mind before undertaking a new instrument. For starters, you’re not going to be great out of the gate. Just because you’re older doesn’t mean it moves any quicker for you but that’s not something to be discouraged by. Ask your teacher lots of questions, put in daily practice time at home, and always remind yourself that learning an instrument is a long process and that you’re investing in a life-long hobby.
You should also consider that it will take more than one lesson a week to begin seeing results. If you want to see growth, you need to play every day for at least a few minutes but preferably at least a half hour. In order to get your money’s worth out of lessons, you have to do your part at home. One way to get your minutes in is to make sure your instrument is accessible at home. Try playing during the commercial breaks of your favorite television show or set aside some time in the morning to play while you enjoy your coffee. There is no wrong time to play (unless you’re taking drums and have nearby neighbors) so find a practice regiment that works best for your schedule.
Learning to play an instrument is like learning a new language. It takes time, it takes patience, it takes commitment, and it gets easier as you go as new concepts build on old ones. For this reason, it’s important to also give yourself a break if it doesn’t all make sense right away. Plan on taking lessons for at least six months before you even consider quitting.
So what are the benefits? Learning an instrument improves brain power, keeps your limbs agile, occupies your time, encourages social activity, and is fun.
